We have been raising Great Danes for 13 years now. Our first two came into our lives from reputable breeders and, as Responsible Dog Owners, we took them through obedience training and socialized them. Our third dane, Jinkies, was from a not-so-reputable breeder and came with a host of physical problems that started with nutritional deficiencies and escalated into two severe bone diseases and a break in her leg by a growth plate and several folding fractures. After major surgery to allow her to keep the leg followed by almost a year of limited activity and no socialization (to prevent further injury) she was finally allowed out to join the world. She was scared to death of everything, she was wild with a years worth of pent up energy and she had a serious case of resource guarding. All of these were to be expected and required a lot of work with our trainer, Trina Strong, and a lot of research.
I was blessed, as Jinkies pushed me into a love of dog training, teaching the dogs and their humans how to get the dogs to listen, learn and reflect the wanted behaviors of a polite, well mannered dog. I mentored under Trina for several years before taking a break for my health. At that point we brought in Desi (pictured above) from a rescue. Rescue dogs each bring their very own and often unique challenges. Desi brought crate trauma, separation anxiety and the highest pitched cry every heard. He's better than a burglar alarm. If someone steps near the property his siren goes off.
We had a lot of work to do with him and, thanks to Trina, our good friend Cari, tons of research and a LOT of work Desi is now a well behaved service dog for me when my mobility challenges act up.
Thanks to Jinkies with her challenges and Desi, our second chance dog, I started looking into furthering my education. I want to help the dog that needs a second (or third) chance. And I want to do it as gently as possible, not creating future issues by using harsh corrective measures. I recently graduated from CATCH Dog Trainers Academy and complted a mentorship under Neil Hutchens, Director, Military Family Dog Training ™ of Committed Canines Dog Services, LLC. and began working for the company as a dog trainer.
